Ok, I listened to general advice about the safe and ideal sized bike for the 14 year old and 15" seemed to be the most popular choice.

I know, I know - I should have brought him to the shop and got him properly sized (the last time I remember his height being measured he was 5'6". Now, all of a sudden he's 5' 10"!!) but I was trying to surprize him.

So, do I need to take the bike back and learn my lesson or will I tell the pup it'll do just fine for another 2 years?

are you sure it was a 15", Joe, it looked fine when I saw you on saturday..and it definitely looked bigger than a 15"..17" would be ideal for him, but it all depennds on the top tube length ( the Crossbar ) if its under the 20" length ,you're in trouble..those Specialized also have a bit of a slope in the top tube..
See how he goes, and if he grows out of it too soon, swap his with yours..

I'll check the dimensions but that advice about swapping his for mine sounds like a great idea - it'll be a "take it or leave it" scenario!

I think part of the problem was himself hangin' out with his mates on their 20" treks and (like most modern teenagers) he has never shown an ounce of gratitude for anything in his life. But I digress.......
