Does anybody know can you get Garmin files for Ireland, road maps is what I'm looking for.

To suit the Garmin Edge 702

Also, what is the lowest spec Garmin that will display your route on the screen, the Edge 702 has all the bells and whistles but it's mad expensive.

I remember Ryan Sherlock saying he could use his for training, you can record a route and race yourself in real time, basically I'll pay for anything that makes riding on the road less boring...

I know I could ride my bike with other people so I wouldn't be bored, but I don't like you humans

I presume it's the Edge 705 you're looking at, I have one, you can get road maps for Ireland alright. Have a look at the map viewer on the Garmin website.
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavntEurope.jsp#
You'll have to zoom in to the 300m view to see minor roads but they are there.
Topographic maps of Ireland for off road use are available free.

If you really want something cheap, Halfords are doing car sat-nav units for €80 if you can find a way of attaching it to the bars.

I got a 705 as well... €320 i paid for mine with HR from www.globalgizmos.co.uk

i put the free topo map the rdhma is talking about. there are ok but i'd like to have roads on them as well.... can you do that?

I have to admit though, they really do take the fun out of being lost.

these yokes...
if somebody from say limerick like Rob..has a route map made on his yoke of some deadly trail, can i download/upload the route into a GPS unit and follow it around the track And what if i have a GPS and i go out to wicklow and wander around looking for trails..will it have all the wandering bits or can I edit out the bits where I got lost..
Can I get the Horn Of El Dorado from using one of these or are they a gimmick ?

Here, the day I see Richie cycling around Wicklow, navigating by his bar mounted GPS, well that's the day we know this sport is doomed.

you'll only get the Flaccid Phallus of Frederick from these things - the amount of feckin' beeping and whistling out of them - like R2D2 with tourettes...

Have been doing a lot of research on these things for the last few weeks and the 705 seems to be the way to go if your looking for a serious training aid with HR and cadence..

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160

Go for the 605 if its just mapping your after... a bit cheaper with a few less features..

The 205 though is the basic basic version... no HR or cadence, no base maps on screen but you can download and overlay your route onto a google map when you get home.. a cheap and cheerful alternative...

I just got a 705 with HR on eBay for about €280... happy days...

Why note just tape a huge OS map to your bars and a faulty smoke alarm? mapping and beeping on the cheap.

Why would you need HR on your Mac, Sure your HR never gets much above resting these days

Yeah... great training tool.... that's what I was thinking... I could race myself last tuesday against myself this tuesday...in real time, then I could race myself last tuesday and this tuesday against myself next tuesday.... soon there'll be millions of me all racing each other...

Seriously though... I think they're great

you could do all sorts of spins then just send people the Garmin files of where to go, you could lead spins from the comfort of your bed...

Can I get the Horn Of El Dorado from using one of theseYes, yes and probably not...

If you just want to stick to your local trails you don't need one.
If you want to cycle around the manufactured trail centres you don't need one.

but
If you want to explore where no Mountain biker has been before
If you want to try someone else's deadly trail.
If you need to call in the Mountain rescue
If you're in another country where there are no proper maps.
If you are a trail builder or a race organiser
they are the business.

Deadly... I can't feicin' wait to go exploring... I can hear new trails calling...

Another alternative would be to get a hand held mapping unit and pop it in your bag... no fear of it getting damaged in a crash or the likes..

Surely Mr Mac you'd be far happier continuing as you are...

Popping in for the the occasional race ass whooping session...

Move along now nothing to see here...
