and no, it's not a new bike-dance before you ask
front end seems to shudder/vibrate real badly when I apply the front brake on the XC bike - wheel/axle seems fine/tight, callipers/pads are fine, headset seems ok.... any ideas?

I reckon that bike is wrecked, all them fancy red bits have caused catastrophic judder/shudder on the front end, find the nearest goober and sell it to him quickly.....
Did you make sure the disc is tight on the hub??

Your front disc might be loose, or your headset might be loose
Headset or fork bushings.....

thanks lads, but I think Damo is right, the red stuff has wrecked it - I thrown it in the skip

Will ya PM me the location of that skip asap......
Is the shudder like
"da,da,da,dada,dada,dada,dada,dada,da"
or
"der,da,dah,der,da,dah,der,da,dah,der,da,dah,der,da ,dah,.."
Very different problems, but a good set of ear muffs will cure both.
I had a odd noise trailbuilding on Sunday...
"da da, da da, da dadadadadadaddada, boom!", but I think it was the old ticker.

Have you checked your arms ?? it might be your arms.... have you checked them ?
Grease your front disc.... do it, then tell me the problem isn't solved

well yeah, but I've no tattoos on them ... maybe that's the problem
I had that kind of problem with a Stumpjumper Fergal. After scratching my head for a couple of days I eventually tracked problem down to a little wear and movement in my rear shock bushing.
It make the bike feel like the Head set is loose.
No chance its the anti lock braking kicking in ? Have you accidentally turned on the traction control :-)

Any chance the frame is Cracked? Stan had some howling brakes at the Mega, and after chaning pads/disc and going through everything else, he found a crack at the brake mount.

oh nice one Darragh - like thanks a lot man, putting the willies up me that my bike is cracked just days before the XC Nationals - yeah well nice try, but you're not gonna faze me, you'll need to try a lot harder than that, and if even hear a hint of someone mumbling "cracked frame" on the start line - well....can-opener and a can o' whupass.....say no more ;-)

That howling wasn't Stan's brakes it was his breathing. And infinitely preferable to a doomed hissing sound... ;-)
